Spain have entered another chapter of football history, extending their unbeaten run to 40 consecutive international matches after a convincing 4-1 victory over Croatia in the UEFA Nations League.

The milestone was sealed in Seville on Tuesday, with Lamine Yamal once again at the centre of Spain’s attacking brilliance. The 19-year-old scored twice, including an early opener, while Marc Pubill and Nico Williams also got on the scoresheet. Croatia briefly threatened a comeback through Dion Beljo, but Spain regained control to finish with a comfortable victory.

Spain’s remarkable streak began with a 1-0 friendly defeat to Colombia on March 22, 2024. Since then, Luis de la Fuente’s side have gone through Euro 2024, the 2026 World Cup and the opening stages of the current Nations League campaign without losing in normal or extra time.

The run includes some of the biggest occasions in international football. Spain won Euro 2024 and then lifted the 2026 FIFA World Cup, defeating Argentina 1-0 after extra time in the final. FIFA said the World Cup victory took Spain’s unbeaten run in regular time to 38 matches, while the Spanish federation described it as a new record for a men’s national team.

There is one technical footnote to the streak. Spain lost the 2025 Nations League final to Portugal on penalties, but the match was recorded as a 2-2 draw after extra time. Consequently, penalty shootout defeats do not count as losses when calculating the conventional unbeaten sequence.

De la Fuente’s team has also shown remarkable depth. Spain used 62 different players during the earlier stages of the run, while retaining a strong core of established stars and emerging talents. Yamal’s continued development has added another dimension to a side that has already conquered Europe and the world.

With the 40-match mark now reached, Spain’s extraordinary consistency under De la Fuente has become one of the defining stories of international football.
