₹3.15 Lakh Crore in Jan Dhan Accounts, But 15.37 Crore Remain Inoperative

Nearly one in every four accounts opened under the Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY) is inoperative, while more than 5.72 crore accounts have a zero balance, according to an RTI response from the Union Finance Ministry.

As of August 12, 2026, the country had 59.03 crore PMJDY accounts holding a combined balance of ₹3,15,179.90 crore, the Department of Financial Services said in its response to an RTI application filed by activist Chandra Shekhar Gaur.

Of the total accounts, 32.89 crore were held by women, including transgender account holders, while 26.14 crore were held by men. The data showed that 5.72 crore accounts had zero balance, while 15.36 crore accounts were classified as inoperative.

Uttar Pradesh recorded the highest number of zero-balance accounts at 95.92 lakh, followed by Bihar with 62.35 lakh, West Bengal with 37.20 lakh, Assam with 36.30 lakh and Maharashtra with 36.04 lakh.

The state also topped the list for inoperative accounts, with 3.23 crore, followed by Bihar at 1.59 crore, Madhya Pradesh at 1.35 crore, West Bengal at 1.02 crore and Maharashtra at 97.94 lakh.

Uttar Pradesh had the largest overall PMJDY account base at 10.51 crore, followed by Bihar with 7.01 crore, West Bengal with 5.73 crore, Rajasthan with 3.87 crore and Maharashtra with 3.85 crore.

Launched in August 2014 as the National Mission for Financial Inclusion, PMJDY seeks to provide universal access to banking services, financial literacy and social security coverage.

The RTI response, dated September 1, said the Centre does not centrally maintain gender-wise data on account balances, zero-balance accounts or inoperative accounts. It also does not maintain centralised data on accounts with balances below ₹100, those closed in the past five years, or accounts blocked or frozen over suspected fraud or cybercrime.
