




28 Years of Pokhran Nuclear Tests: PM Hails Scientists on National Technology Day
On National Technology Day , Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday paid tribute to India’s scientific community and highlighted the historic significance of the 1998 Pokhran nuclear tests , calling them a defining moment that showcased the nation’s scientific strength and determination.
The Prime Minister said the successful nuclear tests conducted at Pokhran in Rajasthan reflected India’s scientific excellence and unwavering commitment, marking a turning point in the country’s technological and strategic journey. He noted that the events of May 11, 1998 , remain a matter of national pride and continue to inspire the vision of a self-reliant India .
Recalling the milestone, Modi said the Pokhran nuclear tests demonstrated India’s indigenous capability in advanced science and defence technology, bringing global attention to its research and innovation potential. The tests, conducted in multiple phases under Operation Shakti , positioned India as a nation capable of executing complex scientific achievements independently.
He emphasised that technology today has become a key pillar in building a self-reliant India , playing a crucial role in accelerating innovation, expanding opportunities, and strengthening growth across sectors. According to him, future progress depends on empowering talent, encouraging research, and developing solutions that serve both national development and public aspirations .
The Prime Minister also lauded Indian scientists, describing them as the true architects of the nation’s pride and self-respect . He acknowledged their dedication and contribution in placing India among leading scientific nations.
In his message, Modi shared a Sanskrit Subhashitam referring to Agni Missile as a powerful force symbolising energy and transformation, describing it as the element that awakens hidden potential within matter and drives creation and motion in the universe. He linked this idea to the spirit of scientific discovery and innovation .
National Technology Day , observed every year on May 11 , commemorates the Pokhran nuclear tests of 1998 and celebrates India’s achievements in science, engineering, and innovation.
