24 Kolkata Schoolgirls Hospitalised With Fever, Vomiting and Abdominal Pain

At least 24 girl students at a Kolkata school were rushed to RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on Monday night, August 10, after they fell ill with symptoms including fever, abdominal pain and vomiting.

According to a hospital official, the students were admitted to the emergency department and are currently stable. Doctors are closely monitoring their condition and conducting medical examinations to determine what caused several students to fall ill around the same time.

The exact cause of the illness remains unknown. Hospital authorities are examining the possibility of a food- or water-borne problem, while an infectious cause has also not been ruled out.

“We are conducting the necessary examinations to determine the cause of their symptoms,” the hospital official said, adding that the students continue to be monitored.

The incident has prompted medical authorities to assess whether the students' symptoms could be connected to a common source. However, there is no confirmed finding yet linking the cases to contaminated food or water.

Meanwhile, school authorities have not yet issued a statement regarding the incident or the circumstances in which the students became unwell.

Sources in the West Bengal Health Department said Health Minister Sharadwat Mukhopadhyay may visit the hospital to take stock of the situation and review the condition of the students.

Further details are expected once doctors complete their examinations and health officials establish the cause of the simultaneous illness among the schoolgirls.
