229 migrants rescued from overcrowded truck in Mexico amid rising illegal migration

Mexican authorities discovered 229 migrants packed into the back of a truck on Monday in the eastern state of Veracruz, marking the first major such incident in months and signaling a potential uptick in migration north toward the United States . Most of the migrants were from Central America , including 17 minors , and several were reportedly dehydrated .

The truck, which had been reported stolen , was found after migrants began shouting for help from a police impound lot. According to José Manuel Pozos , Veracruz’s deputy government secretary, emergency responders freed the migrants after workers at the lot heard banging from inside. They were later transported away in state police buses, though authorities did not disclose their exact destination. Migrants without legal status are typically handed over to Mexico’s immigration agency .

Veracruz is a known corridor for illegal migration , where criminal groups often exploit people traveling north. Migrants are frequently smuggled in overcrowded and unsafe trucks to evade authorities. Trailers are sometimes specially modified with hidden compartments, and smugglers have even used fake ambulances to bypass checkpoints.

Although migration from Central America to the U.S. plummeted during former President Donald Trump’s administration , incidents like these indicate that northbound migration is slowly increasing . From 2022 to 2024, Mexican authorities significantly stepped up vehicle seizures and migrant detentions . Shelters in southern Mexico report that while numbers remain small, Central Americans are once again attempting the journey north .

Past tragedies highlight the risks involved: in 2021, several migrants died in southern Mexico in an accident, and in 2022, 53 migrants were found dead inside a truck abandoned in San Antonio, Texas .
