A 21-year-old third-year engineering student of IIT-Kharagpur was found dead on campus on Saturday morning, in what police suspect to be a case of suicide .

The deceased has been identified as Jaiveer Singh Doriya , a student from Ahmedabad. His body was discovered in a pool of blood near the Atal Bihari Vajpayee Hall by campus security personnel, who immediately alerted institute authorities and police.

Officials said the student was rushed to the BC Roy Hospital on campus, where doctors declared him brought dead.

Preliminary police investigation suggests that the student may have allegedly jumped from the eighth floor of a hostel building. However, authorities have clarified that the exact cause of death will be confirmed only after the post-mortem examination.

An IIT-Kharagpur official said the institute is extending full cooperation to the investigation. “The matter is under inquiry, and all necessary steps are being taken in coordination with the police,” the official said.

The incident has once again raised concerns over student mental health in premier educational institutions. Over the years, IIT-Kharagpur has witnessed several such tragic incidents on campus, though there is no officially maintained consolidated public record of the total number of similar cases.

Police have begun further inquiry into the circumstances leading to the death.
