In a major anti-narcotics operation, authorities in Tirupati district destroyed nearly 4,100 kilograms of seized cannabis, estimated to be worth over ₹20 crore in the international market.

The disposal was carried out after completing all legal procedures, in the presence of senior district officials.

Home Minister Vangalapudi Anitha reiterated the government’s strict “zero-tolerance” policy on drugs, warning that those involved in trafficking would face stringent action. She emphasized that protecting the youth from the dangers of narcotics remains a top priority and praised the district police for dismantling a significant drug network.

Officials have heightened surveillance in recent months following a surge in cannabis smuggling from the Andhra–Odisha border. Intelligence inputs identified Tirupati and nearby areas as key transit points used by traffickers. Acting on this, police teams led by District SP Subbarayudu conducted surprise inspections, leading to multiple seizures that totaled 4,100 kilograms .

After obtaining court approval, the seized cannabis was destroyed under the supervision of District Collector Venkateswarlu and police officials, in accordance with legal and environmental norms.

The Home Minister stressed that public cooperation is crucial to achieving a drug-free state, urging citizens to report any suspicious activities to the police. She added that the government will continue to take strict measures to eliminate drug networks across Andhra Pradesh.
