18-year-old challenges police in opium case as six police officials face suspension in Mandsaur

Six police personnel have been suspended for failing to follow proper procedures during the investigation of an alleged opium smuggling case involving an 18-year-old man, officials confirmed on Tuesday.

Superintendent of Police (SP) Vinod Kumar Meena said that the suspended personnel belonged to the Malhargarh police station . A departmental inquiry has been initiated against them for committing procedural irregularities in the investigation.

The suspended staff include the then station in-charge, two sub-inspectors, and three constables . Their names have not been publicly disclosed , according to officials.

SP Meena also said that a detailed investigation into the opium smuggling case is underway.

The accused, an 18-year-old resident of Rajasthan, has challenged the police action , claiming the case against him is false. His lawyer, Himanshu Thakur , stated that the case was registered by Malhargarh police in August under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act , alleging that 2.71 kilograms of smuggled opium were recovered from his client.

Thakur added, “Upon being summoned by the High Court, Superintendent of Police Meena appeared before the court on Tuesday and informed the court about the suspension of six police personnel.”

Following the hearing, the Indore bench of the Madhya Pradesh High Court has reserved its order on the petition filed by the accused, after considering arguments from both sides.

The case has drawn attention for the alleged mishandling by the police and the significant quantity of opium reportedly recovered. Authorities have assured that the departmental inquiry will determine the extent of procedural lapses , and further action will be taken based on the findings.
