18 Dead, Nearly 800 Affected as Heavy Monsoon Rains Batter Maharashtra's Thane District

At least 18 people have lost their lives in rain-related incidents across Maharashtra's Thane district since the onset of the 2026 southwest monsoon, while 797 people have been affected by floods, landslides, wall collapses and other weather-related disasters, according to the district administration.

The official report, released on Tuesday, said two of the fatalities were recorded on Monday, taking the overall monsoon death toll in the district to 18. In addition, 17 people have been injured in separate rain-related incidents during the current monsoon season.

The district, which borders Mumbai, witnessed several days of heavy rainfall this month, resulting in widespread flooding, landslides and wall collapses in several localities. Authorities said the continuous downpour has severely disrupted normal life and caused extensive damage to homes and public infrastructure.

According to the report, four people have been missing since July 24 after being swept away in floodwaters or drowning in water bodies. Search and rescue teams are continuing efforts to trace them.

A total of 229 families, comprising 797 people, have been affected by landslides, overflowing rivers, flooding, wall collapses and other rain-induced calamities. The affected families have been shifted to relief camps, where the administration is providing shelter and essential assistance.

Heavy rains have also caused widespread property damage. The report said 187 houses have either collapsed completely or suffered partial damage. Besides residential structures, five huts, one community hall and one anganwadi centre were also damaged due to intense rainfall and strong winds. Additionally, three poultry units suffered losses during the spell of inclement weather.

The district administration said relief, rescue and restoration operations are continuing across the affected areas. Officials are monitoring vulnerable locations, assisting displaced families and restoring essential services as the district remains on alert amid the ongoing monsoon season.

The situation in Thane reflects the broader impact of the active southwest monsoon across parts of Maharashtra, where heavy rainfall has triggered flooding and other rain-related incidents in several districts, prompting authorities to maintain a high level of preparedness.
