15 Years as Andhra Pradesh CM: Chandrababu Naidu’s Legacy of Leadership and Impact

Andhra Pradesh Governor S. Abdul Nazeer extended his congratulations to Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu on completing 15 years in office. Posting on X, the Governor said:

“I extend my hearty congratulations to Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Sri N. Chandrababu Naidu garu on completion of 15 years as Chief Minister. Sri Chandrababu Naidu is a visionary leader and I am confident that the State is poised to develop by leaps and bounds under his able leadership.”

Responding to the Governor, CM Naidu expressed his gratitude:

“Thank you very much for your kind words and wishes, Hon’ble Governor Garu. It has been the greatest honour of my life to serve my people, and I feel truly blessed for the opportunity.”

With a cumulative tenure of 15 years as Chief Minister, N. Chandrababu Naidu ranks among India’s longest-serving state leaders. The list is topped by Pawan Kumar Chamling of Sikkim, who held office for nearly 24.5 years, while Naidu currently stands at 25th position.

N. Chandrababu Naidu’s career is closely tied to modern Andhra Pradesh, both before and after its bifurcation. He first assumed office as Chief Minister of the undivided state on September 1, 1995, representing the Kuppam constituency in Chittoor, and quickly emerged as a reform-oriented leader focused on technology-driven governance and administrative modernization.

During 1995–2004, he wielded significant national influence, shaping coalition politics as a key figure in the United Front and later as an ally of Prime Minister Vajpayee’s NDA. His strong rapport with Vajpayee helped facilitate Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam’s nomination as President in 2002, and under his leadership, Hyderabad was transformed into a global IT hub, earning him the moniker “CEO Chief Minister.”

After Andhra Pradesh’s bifurcation in 2014, N. Chandrababu Naidu accepted the new reality with pragmatism, becoming the first Chief Minister of the residuary state. Stripped of its capital and key infrastructure, he turned adversity into opportunity, drawing on his experience transforming Hyderabad to envision Amaravati as a modern, world-class capital. His tenure faced challenges, including friction with the Centre over special category status and opposition from both YSR’s legacy network and Jagan Mohan Reddy’s government, which frequently targeted his projects. Yet, Naidu displayed political agility — forging alliances with the BJP and Pawan Kalyan’s Jana Sena Party during the first and third elections post-bifurcation — and has remained a leader defined by persistence, adaptability, and a blend of vision with pragmatism in driving Andhra Pradesh’s long-term development.

While respected for his development agenda, Naidu was criticized for being slow to take a clear stand on Telangana, voicing concern for Seemandhra but avoiding outright opposition, and miscalculating that the UPA under Sonia Gandhi would resist statehood, leaving the TDP reacting rather than shaping events.

His early focus on IT and urban infrastructure earned global recognition but sidelined agriculture — a gap Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy successfully exploited, helping Congress win in 2004. Within the TDP, he has positioned his son Nara Lokesh as successor, seen by some as strategic continuity but by others as limiting senior leaders’ opportunities, while core NTR supporters still feel he betrayed his father-in-law, leaving lingering questions over his legitimacy among the party’s traditional base.
