In a major boost to public healthcare, West Bengal has announced the implementation of the National Health Mission (NHM) , expanded coverage under Ayushman Bharat , and the launch of a statewide Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination campaign , signalling a significant push towards strengthening healthcare infrastructure, financial protection and disease prevention across the state.

Addressing a health department programme in Kolkata on Saturday, Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari said the Centre has sanctioned ₹2,103 crore under the NHM for West Bengal, with ₹527 crore already released. The funding is expected to improve healthcare delivery, upgrade public health facilities and support key health programmes across the state.

The announcement marks an important development in the context of India's federal healthcare system, where centrally sponsored schemes have often become subjects of political debate between the Union government and opposition-ruled states. Health policy experts note that while disagreements have occasionally emerged over funding structures and programme branding, effective healthcare delivery ultimately depends on cooperation between state and central governments.

A key component of the state's healthcare expansion is the rollout of Ayushman Bharat-Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PM-JAY) , which is expected to benefit more than 1.36 crore families in West Bengal. The scheme provides eligible beneficiaries with cashless treatment coverage of up to ₹5 lakh annually and is aimed at reducing out-of-pocket medical expenditure, one of the leading causes of financial distress among low-income households.

Alongside healthcare financing reforms, the state has launched a large-scale HPV vaccination programme targeting nearly 7.65 lakh adolescent girls aged 14 years. Under the initiative, girls who have completed 14 years of age but are yet to turn 15 will receive a free single dose of the Gardasil-4 vaccine through 881 government healthcare facilities , including medical colleges, district hospitals, sub-divisional hospitals and block primary health centres.

Public health experts regard HPV vaccination as one of the most effective tools for preventing cervical cancer , which remains among the leading causes of cancer-related deaths among women in India. The campaign aligns with the country's broader preventive healthcare strategy and the World Health Organization's goal of eliminating cervical cancer as a public health threat.

The state government has also announced the establishment of monitoring control rooms to oversee district hospitals and improve service delivery. Officials believe that the combination of NHM funding, expanded insurance coverage and preventive vaccination measures could significantly improve healthcare access and long-term health outcomes for millions of residents across West Bengal.
