Rajamahendravaram is quietly reshaping its iconic Godavari riverfront, laying the groundwork for a safer and more modern pilgrimage experience ahead of the 2027 Godavari Maha Pushkaralu . In a move that blends infrastructure modernization with public safety , the city has launched a ₹13.12 crore underground cabling project aimed at eliminating long-standing risks posed by overhead electrical lines near busy ghats.

The initiative was formally launched by Energy Minister Gottipati Ravi Kumar and Tourism Minister Kandula Durgesh , who described it as part of a larger push to transform the city into a world-class spiritual and tourism hub . The project will replace exposed wiring with a state-of-the-art underground power network , covering a key stretch from Kotilingala Ghat to the 33/11 KV River View substation , under the execution of APEPDCL.

For decades, overhead power lines along the ghats have been a safety concern , particularly during peak pilgrimage seasons when lakhs of devotees gather along the riverbanks. These lines not only obstruct movement but also increase the risk of electrical hazards , especially during rains and strong winds. The new system is designed to eliminate such vulnerabilities, ensuring a secure and seamless environment for visitors.

Officials say the upgrade will also significantly improve the quality and reliability of electricity supply , preventing outages during adverse weather and managing high demand during festival surges . By removing poles and tangled wires, the project is expected to enhance the visual appeal of the ghats , aligning them with global standards seen in major riverfront destinations.

The timing of the project is strategic. With the Pushkaralu expected to draw millions of pilgrims , the Andhra Pradesh government is accelerating a series of infrastructure upgrades across the Godavari region. From power systems to tourism facilities, the focus is on building a resilient and future-ready urban ecosystem that can handle massive footfall without compromising safety or comfort.

Minister Durgesh emphasized that Rajamahendravaram’s transformation goes beyond a single project. Backed by the leadership of Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu and Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan , the government is working on a holistic development roadmap , aiming to position the city as a key destination for spiritual tourism and riverfront experiences .

With senior leaders, legislators, and officials in attendance, the launch of the underground cabling works signals more than just a technical upgrade—it reflects a broader vision of turning Rajamahendravaram into a cleaner, safer, and globally competitive pilgrimage city , ready to host one of India’s most significant religious gatherings.
