A marriage between a 13-year-old girl and a 42-year-old man was prevented in Madhya Pradesh’s Indore district after swift intervention by local authorities , officials said on Friday. The incident has once again highlighted the urgent need for stronger grassroots awareness of child marriage laws and stricter enforcement mechanisms.

According to officials, preparations were underway in Rangwasa village when the administration received a tip-off about the proposed wedding. Upon reaching the venue, the girl’s family produced a marksheet claiming she was an adult . However, officials grew suspicious and sought verification from the education department, which confirmed that the document was forged . Subsequent checks of official records revealed the girl was only 13 years old , leading to the immediate cancellation of the marriage.

Authorities counselled the family on the legal implications, noting that under the Prohibition of Child Marriage Act, 2006 , marriages involving girls below 18 and boys below 21 are illegal and punishable with imprisonment up to two years , a fine of up to ₹1 lakh , or both.

The case underscores the need for community-level awareness campaigns , particularly in rural areas where social customs often clash with legal safeguards . Experts stress that schools play a crucial role in maintaining accurate records and verifying age-related documents early, reducing the scope for manipulation.

Officials also emphasised the importance of empowering local administration and child protection units to act swiftly on such information. Beyond legal violations, child marriage has severe long-term consequences, including disrupted education, early pregnancies, and serious health risks for minor girls.

The use of forged documents in such cases has raised concerns, prompting calls for stricter penalties to deter attempts to bypass the law and ensure better protection for vulnerable children.
