
11,000 Litres of Milk Poured into Narmada River After Ritual; Environmentalists See Red
The pouring of nearly 11,000 litres of milk into the Narmada River in Madhya Pradesh’s Sehore district has triggered widespread debate, highlighting not only environmental concerns but also the deeper social and cultural dimensions behind such practices.
The incident occurred at Satdev village in the Bherunda area, about 90 km from Sehore, marking the culmination of a 21-day religious event that concluded with a ‘mahayagna’. Devotees assembled in large numbers as tankers of milk were emptied into the river amid chants and prayers , reflecting deep-rooted traditions and faith .
Organisers said the offering was part of a spiritual ritual aimed at purifying the river and invoking blessings for prosperity , well-being, and harmony. In Hindu belief systems, rivers like the Narmada River are considered sacred and life-giving, and offerings such as milk symbolise purity , devotion , and gratitude toward nature. Such rituals are also viewed as highly auspicious .
Beyond religion, experts note that these practices are often influenced by cultural continuity and social factors. Large-scale offerings help preserve tradition and reinforce community identity. They also serve as occasions for community gatherings, where collective participation strengthens social bonds. In some cases, the scale of offerings reflects the intensity of devotion or social prestige. Additionally, a lack of awareness about environmental consequences and absence of strict regulation allow such practices to continue.
However, the scale of the milk offering has raised serious environmental concerns. Experts warn that introducing such a large quantity of organic matter into a river can disturb its ecosystem .
Environmentalist Ajay Dube cautioned that milk increases biochemical oxygen demand ( BOD ) in water. As it decomposes, it consumes dissolved oxygen , which is vital for aquatic organisms, potentially leading to fish deaths and disruption of the aquatic balance.
Echoing similar concerns, Subhash Pandey described milk as a high oxygen-demanding pollutant that can trigger eutrophication , resulting in excessive algae growth, degradation of water quality, and loss of biodiversity .
Experts further warn that such contamination may impact communities relying on the river for drinking water, irrigation, and livestock, posing potential health risks and increasing the burden on water treatment systems.
The Narmada River, originating from Amarkantak and flowing over 1,300 km across central India, remains a vital lifeline supporting millions of people and diverse ecosystems.
While faith continues to drive such practices, environmentalists stress the need for a balanced approach. They advocate for eco-friendly alternatives, such as symbolic offerings, to ensure that cultural and spiritual values are preserved without harming fragile natural resources.
