11 monkeys found dead in Karnataka forest as lab tests ongoing, wildlife at risk

Eleven monkeys, including two langurs, were found dead in the Devarayanadurga–Durgadahalli forest area of Tumakuru taluk over the past two days , officials said on Monday. The carcasses of nine monkeys and two langurs were discovered scattered within a radius of 200 to 500 metres.

Forest personnel first arrived at the site on Friday evening , after the matter came to light, and additional deaths were reported on Saturday morning . A post-mortem examination suggested suspected food poisoning as a possible cause, as rice was found in the oesophagus and intestines of the animals. Officials also noted bluish discoloration around the mouth and neck , indicating potential poisoning from decayed leftover food. No immediate signs of disease were detected.

To determine the exact cause of death , authorities have sent viscera samples to laboratories in Bengaluru and the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) for detailed analysis, with reports expected soon. Surveillance in the area has been intensified to prevent any recurrence, and further action will be taken based on the findings.

The incident has raised concerns over forest management and wildlife safety in the region. Experts note that such deaths highlight gaps in monitoring and early-warning systems for wildlife health. The suspected cause of consumption of decayed food also underscores the risks of human-wildlife interaction and improper waste disposal near forest areas. Conservationists warn that losing 11 monkeys in a small area could disrupt local ecosystems , including seed dispersal and predator-prey dynamics, and stress the need for proactive policies and stronger wildlife protection measures .
