

11 Killed in Mirzapur Chain Collision After Suspected Truck Brake Failure, PM Announces Ex-Gratia
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday condoled loss of lives in multi-vehicle collision in Uttar Pradesh’s Mirzapur district , where eleven people were killed including children in a tragic road accident.
The incident occurred at around 8:30 pm on Wednesday night , when a truck reportedly suffered a suspected brake failure , lost control, and rammed into multiple vehicles on a highway stretch in the district. The impact triggered a chain collision involving several vehicles , leading to chaos and multiple casualties.
According to reports, the force of the crash was severe, and some vehicles caught fire after collision , further worsening the situation and making rescue operations difficult. Local residents and passers-by rushed to help before emergency teams arrived at the scene.
President Droupadi Murmu also expressed grief over loss of lives in the accident and conveyed condolences to the bereaved families, joining the national leadership in mourning the tragedy. The Vice President and other senior leaders also extended similar condolences.
In his message on X, the Prime Minister said he was deeply anguished by loss of lives due to mishap and prayed for the speedy recovery of those injured.
He also announced financial assistance from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund , stating that an ex-gratia Rs 2 lakh would be given to the next of kin of each deceased, while Rs 50,000 injured victims would receive support.
Officials confirmed that rescue operations were carried out immediately after the crash , with injured persons shifted to nearby hospitals. Traffic on the affected route has since been restored after clearance of damaged vehicles.
Police have launched a detailed investigation into the incident, focusing on mechanical failure of trucks, chain reaction impact, and road conditions . Eyewitness accounts are also being recorded to determine the exact sequence of events leading to the fatal collision.
Authorities continue to examine vehicle damage and other technical evidence as part of the ongoing probe into the tragedy.
