At least eleven people , including seven children , sustained severe burn injuries after a suspected LPG cylinder leak triggered an explosion and fire at a residential quarter for migrant labourers in the Salempur Bangar area on Thursday morning, police said.

According to officials, most of the victims suffered 50-60 per cent third-degree burns , with several children reported to be in critical condition . The injured include a two-month-old infant , a pregnant woman , two men aged 43 , and c hildren between five and ten years old .

Station House Officer Tarsem Kumar said the incident occurred when a family living near a factory was preparing food using firewood . “An LPG cylinder kept nearby was leaking . When the gas came into contact with the open flame , it ignited, causing a powerful explosion that also damaged the walls of the residential unit,” he said.

All the injured were initially rushed to the civil hospital in Jagadhari . Those with critical burn injuries were later referred to a specialised medical facility in Chandigarh for advanced treatment.

Eyewitness Raj Kumar , a local resident, said he heard a loud blast while returning home from work in the morning. “There was panic in the area as people rushed to help the injured,” he said.

Residents noted that the locality houses multiple quarters occupied by migrant workers employed in nearby factories, raising concerns over safety measures in such densely populated accommodations.

Police have launched an investigation to determine the exact cause of the leak and assess whether safety lapses contributed to the incident.
