Telangana is set to strengthen its public healthcare infrastructure with the upcoming launch of the Telangana Institute of Medical Sciences (TIMS) at Sanathnagar, a massive super-specialty government hospital designed to provide advanced and affordable treatment to patients across the state. The facility, which is expected to be inaugurated in June, is being positioned as one of the largest government-run healthcare institutions in Telangana.

State Health Minister Damodar Rajanarsimha on Tuesday inspected the hospital’s ongoing trial run and reviewed preparations ahead of the formal launch. During his visit, the minister toured the A, B and C blocks and examined multiple departments, including outpatient registration, inpatient wards, emergency care units, diagnostic laboratories, MRI and CT scan facilities, mechanised laundry services and kitchen operations.

Officials informed the minister that the trial phase is currently being used to streamline hospital operations and identify gaps before full-scale public services begin. Limited outpatient and diagnostic services have already started as part of the testing process.

The hospital has been built with a capacity of nearly 1,000 beds , including around 300 emergency and critical care beds , significantly enhancing Hyderabad’s emergency medical response system. Authorities are also planning specialised departments for cardiology, nephrology, neurology, gastroenterology and organ transplant surgeries .

During the inspection, Rajanarsimha directed officials to ensure uninterrupted 24-hour power and water supply throughout the campus. Stressing patient safety, he instructed authorities not to compromise on fire safety systems and emergency preparedness measures. He also asked officials to increase the number of registration and pharmacy counters to handle future patient footfall efficiently and reduce waiting times.

The minister further instructed hospital authorities to make all advanced diagnostic equipment fully operational before the launch and ensure adequate deployment of doctors, technicians and support staff.

Speaking to the media later, Rajanarsimha said the government plans to develop Sanathnagar TIMS into a “Centre of Excellence” for heart-related diseases and organ transplantation . A dedicated medical research centre is also proposed within the campus to support advanced treatment and healthcare innovation.

Officials from the Health Department and Roads & Buildings Department have been asked to complete all pending works on a war footing ahead of the inauguration. The government believes the new TIMS facility will emerge as a critical lifeline for affordable tertiary healthcare in Telangana.
