Jio Platforms’ ₹30,213-crore initial public offering (IPO) created history on Wednesday, becoming fully subscribed within just 100 minutes of opening, the fastest subscription for an Indian mega IPO. The issue, which opened on October 21, is set to become India’s largest-ever public offering, surpassing Hyundai Motor India’s ₹27,870-crore IPO in 2024.

The strong opening was driven by institutional investors, whose reserved portion was fully subscribed within the first 10 minutes and attracted nearly twice the available shares in under 30 minutes. The institutional category subsequently received bids for multiple times its reserved quota, while retail and non-institutional participation initially remained comparatively subdued.

The IPO carries a price band of ₹1,065 to ₹1,119 per share, valuing Jio Platforms at approximately $108 billion at the upper end. The issue comprises a fresh offering of up to 27 crore shares, meaning the proceeds will go to the company rather than existing shareholders selling their holdings. The subscription window closes on October 23, with listing expected on October 28.

Investor interest was evident even before the public issue opened. Jio allotted shares worth approximately ₹8,110 crore to 212 anchor investors at ₹1,119 apiece. Demand for this allocation reportedly exceeded ₹2.5 lakh crore, more than 30 times the shares available. Major domestic and international investors participated, including the Life Insurance Corporation of India, BlackRock and Fidelity Investments.

The IPO marks Reliance Industries’ first major public offering in nearly two decades and represents a significant milestone for billionaire Mukesh Ambani’s digital business. However, the fundraising is also a test of whether investors believe Jio can sustain growth beyond its dominant telecom operations.

Managing Director Akash Ambani has outlined ambitions in artificial intelligence (AI), cloud computing, digital services and enterprise technology. With a customer base of 533.3 million, Jio aims to use its network, software platforms and technology infrastructure to generate higher-margin revenue as subscriber additions alone become a less powerful growth driver.

The record-breaking subscription signals strong investor appetite, but it does not guarantee listing gains. Investors will ultimately judge whether Jio can turn its enormous customer base and technology investments into sustained earnings growth, making its market debut a closely watched test of India’s digital economy.
