100-Foot Tricolour Becomes New Landmark in Ladakh’s Remote Zanskar Valley

The Indian Army has installed a 100-foot-high national flag at Padum, headquarters of Zanskar district in Ladakh, ahead of Independence Day, combining a symbol of national identity with a message of community engagement and development in the Himalayan region.

Situated at around 3,670 metres, Padum is the administrative centre of the Zanskar Valley and serves as a gateway to remote villages and high-altitude landscapes. Its location gives it importance in a border region where connectivity, infrastructure and engagement with local communities remain significant.

The area is also culturally distinctive, with a rich Buddhist heritage, monasteries and Zanskari traditions. Against this backdrop, the towering tricolour is expected to become a prominent landmark visible from considerable distances, reinforcing the coexistence of local cultural and national identity.

The initiative was undertaken by the Army's ‘Forever in Operations’ division in collaboration with the Zanskar civil administration. Renovation and beautification work was also carried out around the flag site to improve its appearance and public environment. The report does not specify individual landscaping or construction works.

The Army said the initiative seeks to promote patriotism, national integration and pride, particularly among younger people. By creating a highly visible national symbol in a remote setting, the project can provide a daily reminder of shared citizenship and values such as unity, sacrifice and dedication to the nation.

For young residents, the flag can serve as a tangible symbol of belonging and responsibility, while the public space can encourage community ownership and pride.
