10-Man Lens Shock PSG 1-0 To Win French Super Cup For The First Time
Lens produced a stunning upset on Sunday, defeating Paris Saint-Germain 1-0 to lift the French Super Cup for the first time in the club’s history.
Florian Thauvin proved to be the match-winner, scoring in the 32nd minute to give French Cup winners Lens a precious lead against the reigning French champions.
The challenge became even tougher for Lens just seven minutes later when Kyllian Antonio was sent off for a hard foul, leaving the side with 10 players for the remainder of the contest.
Rather than buckle under the pressure, Lens defended resolutely and frustrated a PSG side chasing a fifth consecutive French Super Cup title. The Parisian giants struggled to find a way through as Lens protected their narrow advantage with determination.
PSG’s frustration boiled over late in the match when Nuno Mendes was shown a red card in the 87th minute, reducing both teams to 10 players for the closing stages.
The defeat came just days after PSG had beaten Aston Villa 2-1 to win the UEFA Super Cup, making the result an unexpected setback for the European champions.
Lens entered the contest after finishing second in Ligue 1 last season, six points behind PSG, while also securing the French Cup. The victory now gives the club another major trophy and provides an impressive start to the reign of new coach Dino Toppmöller, who took charge in June following Pierre Sage’s departure for Crystal Palace.
The occasion also attracted Zinedine Zidane, France’s newly appointed coach, who watched the final at Stade Bollaert-Delelis.
For Lens, it was a night of resilience, discipline and history, and a reminder that even PSG can be toppled when the pressure is at its highest.
