10 Killed, Nearly 100 Injured in Russian Strike Near Kyiv After Raytheon Talks
A Russian ballistic missile strike on a site near Kyiv hosting a defence industry event killed at least 10 people and injured nearly 100, Ukrainian officials said. The attack came a day after President Volodymyr Zelenskyy met senior representatives of US defence company Raytheon to discuss strengthening Ukraine’s air defence capabilities.
The strike hit the grounds of a privately operated military training facility in the Bucha district, around 20 to 30 kilometres from central Kyiv, according to acting regional military administration head Ruslan Oliinyk. The attack also damaged 27 homes and 44 vehicles, while emergency crews responded to the site.
The Ukrainian Defence Industry Council said representatives of the country’s defence sector were present at the event when the strike occurred. Prosecutor General Ruslan Kravchenko opened a war crimes investigation into the attack and a separate probe into possible negligence in organising the event. Investigators will examine who approved the location, timing and format of the gathering and whether adequate security precautions were taken. Ukrainian authorities also imposed restrictions on reporting details of the attack.
The strike's timing has drawn attention following Zelenskyy’s meeting with a Raytheon delegation in Kyiv on July 23. The discussions focused on Ukraine’s urgent need for Patriot air defence systems and interceptor missiles, which are considered crucial in countering Russia’s ballistic missile attacks.
Zelenskyy said Ukraine and Raytheon were discussing closer cooperation, including the possibility of jointly producing Patriot interceptors in Ukraine. However, establishing domestic production is expected to take years and would not immediately address Kyiv’s pressing air defence requirements.
It remains unclear whether any Raytheon employees were present at the defence event that was struck. The company did not immediately confirm whether its personnel attended. The attack came amid an escalating cycle of strikes. Ukraine has intensified long-range drone attacks on Russian military, energy and logistical targets, while Russia continues to launch missiles and drones against Ukrainian cities and strategic facilities.
Meanwhile, a Ukrainian strike on a military plant in Russia reportedly killed six people and wounded 26, according to a regional governor.
