A first-of-its-kind India Heritage Centre museum is being planned in Washington, DC, to showcase India’s rich civilisational history, cultural legacy, and global contributions to audiences in the United States. The proposed brick-and-mortar museum aims to engage younger generations of the Indian diaspora through immersive technology, virtual reality, interactive exhibits, and multimedia displays .

Indian-American educationist Amitabh Sharma , who is leading the initiative, said the objective is to spread awareness about India’s ancient heritage, educate diaspora youth, strengthen cultural pride, and improve global understanding of India’s contributions.

The India Heritage Centre is currently searching for a suitable location in the US capital and has approached the Indian Embassy for possible use of a building acquired by the mission in 2013. If the proposal does not materialise, the organisation is prepared to purchase land for the project.

The museum is envisioned as a global centre for Indian civilisation, history, and heritage , serving as an educational resource and cultural bridge for diverse communities. It will feature 10 galleries covering India’s journey from the Indus Valley Civilisation and Vedic traditions to innovations, spiritual heritage, cultural achievements, colonial resistance, the freedom movement, economic growth, and the country’s future global role.

Sharma said experts including indologists, historians, and archaeologists have been consulted over the past eight years to ensure historical accuracy. The centre will also include an auditorium for discussions, research, and intellectual exchanges.

The museum is expected to benefit not only the Indian diaspora but also other immigrant communities in the US by highlighting India’s diversity, inclusiveness, and contributions to humanity.

The project is estimated to cost USD 12 million to USD 14 million and will seek funding through high-net-worth individuals, corporate sponsorships, grants, crowdfunding, and community support. Similar India Heritage Centre projects are also planned in Atlanta, Georgia, and other locations .
