A shooting at Holloman Air Force Base , a major United States Air Force installation in southern New Mexico, left one person dead and another wounded Tuesday evening, base officials said. The incident prompted a temporary lockdown of the installation and sparked a large emergency response before authorities declared the situation under control.

The base, located about six miles southwest of Alamogordo in Otero County and home to the Air Education and Training Command’s 49th Wing, was placed on lockdown at approximately 5:30 p.m. local time after reports of an active shooter near the base convenience store, often called the “shopette,” according to a statement from base officials.

Security personnel responded quickly , and the lockdown was lifted after they determined the area was secure. “Emergency personnel are responding to the situation and there is no threat at this time,” the base statement said. The wounded person was taken for medical treatment.

Official statements have not identified the individuals involved or provided details about how the shooting unfolded. Base officials also have not clarified whether those involved were civilians or military personnel. The base’s convenience store was reported closed following the incident, though it has not been confirmed whether the shooting occurred there.

Local authorities and the base’s public affairs office have said the incident remains under investigation, and no further details, including a possible motive, have been released. Holloman Air Force Base hosts a variety of aircraft training programs and supports national security missions with combat‑ready airmen and personnel.
